You’ll wander the wind-sculpted red badlands of Skazka (“Fairytale”) Canyon, where the rock formations really do look like dragons and castles, and stand beneath the towering red sandstone cliffs of Jeti-Ögüz — the “Seven Bulls” — one of Kyrgyzstan’s most photographed landmarks. On the north shore you’ll trace history at the open-air petroglyph field near Cholpon-Ata, where Bronze Age hunters carved ibex and snow leopards into the boulders thousands of years ago.

Between the sights there’s time to dip your toes in the famously warm, slightly saline waters of Issyk-Köl, sample local food, and hear the legends that give each place its name — all with a friendly local guide who brings the landscape to life.
