About this tour
Hidden in the far south of Naryn province, a stone’s throw from the Chinese border, Kel-Suu is one of the most dramatic and least-visited lakes in Central Asia — a narrow ribbon of glacial water squeezed between sheer rock walls that can only be reached by 4×4 and a short hike. This five-day expedition takes you deep into that wild country, combining the raw landscapes of the eastern Tian Shan with a genuine slice of Silk Road history.
Along the way you’ll overnight at Tash Rabat, a stone caravanserai from the 15th century that once sheltered merchants crossing between Kashgar and the Ferghana valley, and cross the vast At-Bashy steppe where herds of horses run free. The final push to Kel-Suu is an adventure in itself: a rugged track, a border-zone permit, and a walk to a viewpoint over water so still it mirrors the peaks.
You travel by comfortable Russian 4×4 with an experienced driver-guide, sleeping in yurt camps and guesthouses along the route. This is remote, high-altitude travel with limited facilities — and that’s exactly the point. It’s for travellers who want the Kyrgyzstan few people ever see.

Day
Day 1 u2014 Bishkek to Naryn
Leave Bishkek and drive south across the Dolon Pass into the highlands, following the Naryn river to the old provincial town of Naryn. Stop at the Burana Tower en route to stretch your legs among the Silk Road ruins. Overnight in a Naryn guesthouse. (Drive: ~6u20137 hrs)

Day 2 u2014 Naryn to Tash Rabat
A shorter drive up the At-Bashy valley to the Tash Rabat caravanserai, tucked into a side gorge at 3,200 m. Explore the stone chambers, hike the ridge above for valley views, and spend the night in a nearby yurt camp. (Drive: ~3 hrs)

Day 3 u2014 Tash Rabat to Kel-Suu
The expedition's centrepiece: a rugged 4x4 push across open country to the Kel-Suu area, then a walk to a viewpoint over the lake's mirror-still water and cliff walls. Return to a lakeside yurt camp for the night. (Drive + walk: ~5u20136 hrs)

Day 4 u2014 Kel-Suu to Son-Ku00f6l or Naryn
Retrace the track across the steppe with plenty of photo stops among the horse herds, then drive north toward Son-Ku00f6l or Naryn for the night, depending on conditions. (Drive: ~5u20136 hrs)

Day
Day 5 u2014 Return to Bishkek
A scenic final drive back over the passes to Bishkek, arriving in the late afternoon with a memory card full of some of Kyrgyzstan's wildest country. (Drive: ~6u20137 hrs)
