Song-Köl Lake Nomad Horse Trek — 3 Days

Song-Köl is the Kyrgyzstan of the imagination: a vast alpine lake at 3,016 m ringed by rolling summer pastures, where herding families still bring their horses, sheep, and yurts up to the jailoo every June. This three-day horse trek trades the road for the saddle, following old herders’ trails over a mountain pass to the lakeshore — the way local families have travelled for generations.

You don’t need riding experience. Your horses are calm and sure-footed, and a local wrangler rides with the group the whole way, setting an easy pace through wildflower meadows and past grazing herds. Evenings are spent with a nomad family in their felt yurt, sharing a bowl of hot shorpo, learning to make kymyz (fermented mare’s milk), and falling asleep to complete silence under one of the darkest skies you’ll ever see.
